Land at that time could be bought for $1.25 an acre. Aside from building purposes, the best of pine trees, instead
of being a help to settlers, were a hinderance, because transpotation was so difficult and expensive.

Montravill A. Childs among others, drove through to Buffalo with loads of logs for shipment. When they were able to ship fom Mt. Morris and Dansville the settlers felt they were indeed fortunate, for times were hard and the need for money was great.

The first considerable market for pine lumber in Allegany County was at Mt. Morris and Dansville after the completion of the Genesee Valley Canal to those points about 1850.

One of the first known settlers was a man by the name of Bields. He purchased land but while clearing the timbers off, was killed by a falling tree. He was buried in the local cemetary known as the West Genesee Cemetary. As of 1926 this plot of land was owned by Bert Peckman

George Irish purchased land near the cemetary and built his home there in 1835. This was the birthplace of Mrs. Martha Irish Burdick in 1849. As of 1926 the property still remained in the family and part of the original building was still standing.
